I went back to my childhood home for this video so that I could help my parents make a whole bunch of sustainable swap-outs! *NOTE: for anyone making sustainable swaps...make sure to USE WHAT YOU HAVE and finish it up before purchasing new items. It kind of defeats the purpose if you just go out and buy all new things and then toss all of your old stuff. Use everything to completion first. Or...if you’re itching to make a change NOW...DONATE your old items! Over the past couple of years, I’ve done a ton of research about living more sustainably and simplifying our belongings. Michael and I have made MANY sustainable swaps that have become new staples in our apartment and lifestyle. When it comes to educating others on this, however, I find that it’s not all that useful to push your agenda forcefully. Even if it’s a cause you believe in deeply, I strongly abide by the phrase: SHOW, DON’T TELL! So, as you can imagine, I was delighted when my dad came to ME and asked me for some help making sustainable choices at home. I wanted to prove to my parents that making sustainable swap-outs was simple and was something they could easily do at a store they’re already familiar with. Target has so many options for this, so I decided to get all of the swaps at Target. After all, we already have a family Target account, and we already do a lot of our home goods and lifestyle shopping there. Before going to Target, I walked around their house and made note of the things that could be easily swapped out for a more sustainable option (once used to completion, of course). Here’s what we ended with: Wool dryer balls. These are an alternative to dryer sheets that often contain chemicals, and they’re biodegradable, free of dyes and fragrances, and are non-toxic! Bee’s wrap! This is one of my favorites and Michael and I use bee’s wrap in lieu of plastic wrap at home. You can wrap up extra food and it seals with the warmth of your hands! Silicone straws. Silicone is safe, non-toxic and made to last! I use these in my coffee every morning. Silicone reusable bag sets. This cuts out the need for single-use plastic bags or plastic wrap for those food-storage needs. They’re also freezer safe. Aluminum-free, plastic-free deodorant. We’ve been using Native recently! This is my favorite aluminum-free deodorant, and Target now carries Native in the cardboard tube, making it completely plastic-free. Bamboo toothbrushes. Did you know that 3.6 billion plastic toothbrushes are produced every year and a majority of them end up in the ocean and landfills? Bamboo is a better option, but it’s biodegradable and the paper packing is compostable. Shampoo and conditioner bars. The ones that I bought are from Love Beauty and Planet and use biodegradable packaging. The product itself is also free of dyes, parabens, and silicone, and is made with organic coconut oil. Reusable cotton rounds. These are for those people who buy those plastic bags filled with single-use cotton rounds. These reusable bamboo rounds are machine washable and VERY soft.
